Socium Spotlight: Karla Ruiz-Cravioto
You’ve probably heard us say that people aren’t Socium’s most important asset; the right people are Socium’s most important asset. That’s why we started our Socium Spotlight series, where we shine a light on the diverse and unique personalities that make up the Socium team.
For this month’s Socium Spotlight, we’re excited to feature our Shopping & Feeds Strategist, Karla Ruiz-Cravioto!
What made you choose this career path?
Curiosity! I took a marketing class in college, which led me to an internship with a non-profit, where I helped out with their e-mail marketing and social media accounts. I enjoyed the line of work, so I applied to a digital marketing fellowship to learn more about the industry. It didn’t take long for me to realize that digital marketing was a field I was excited to continue growing within.
What initially drew you to Socium Media?
Finding entry-level roles in the marketing field can be surprisingly challenging, that’s why I was immediately drawn to Socium’s Shopping & Feeds apprenticeship. They took a chance on someone eager to learn, offering hands-on experience and guidance. The apprenticeship was a pivotal moment in my career, shaping my journey in ways I never imagined!
What did you do before coming to Socium?
Before coming to Socium, I used to work in the non-profit space! I specifically worked in the climate resiliency sector. I was a program coordinator for the City University of New York Climate Scholars Program and a Program Manager for the Recovery Corps Climate Resiliency initiative in NYC. This line of work allowed me to promote meaningful and equitable solutions to climate change.
What piece of advice would you offer fellow digital marketers?
Keep a beginners mindset! The industry is ever evolving and there’s always something to learn. It can be easy to get comfortable with your past success but staying curious and having an open mind can lead to innovation. It’s important to seek feedback and never shy away from asking questions!
If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?
Knowing what you don’t like is just as important as knowing what you do. When I first started college, I was convinced I wanted to be a neurosurgeon, only to discover that I wasn’t comfortable with blood. I then shifted to Finance and quickly realized that I wasn’t excited about the work, often wishing for the day to end. Eventually, I ended up in digital marketing, and everything seemed to click. While frustrating, each misstep and change of direction taught me valuable lessons about myself and what truly drives me. I would tell my younger self that every experience, no matter how unrelated it may seem, is an integral part of your journey. Stay curious, stay open, and trust that you’ll find your path by learning from what doesn’t work just as much as from what does.
Thank you, Karla, for working with us on this month’s Socium Spotlight!
