Socium Spotlight: Matthew Missert

You’ve probably heard us say that people aren’t Socium’s most important asset; the right people are Socium’s most important asset. That’s why we started our Socium Spotlight series, where we shine a light on the diverse and unique personalities that make up the Socium team.

For this month’s Socium Spotlight, we’re thrilled to feature Paid Media Sr. Strategist, Matthew Missert!

What made you choose this career path?
I’ve always been an analytical thinker. I love finding & telling stories through numbers & connecting data to ads, campaigns, etc. With digital marketing, you get an opportunity to really dive into that.

What made Socium stand out when you were looking for your next adventure?
When it comes to Socium, I have a bit of a unique perspective compared to others—I started working for Sam as an intern out of college & have been along for the ride ever since. Like me, Sam is an RIT graduate and had contacted one of my professors looking for interns. The rest is history!

What’s your favorite job perk that Socium offers?
I love working remotely; it allows me to keep a strong work/life balance by working during the week and hiking in my spare time. I lived in NYC for the first half of my career at Socium but transitioned to working remotely as soon as COVID hit, and it’s honestly changed my life.

What did you use to dream about being when you grew up?
I grew up playing hockey, so my dream as a young kid was always to play in the NHL. But since high school, I have wanted to open up my own restaurant at some point.

What piece of advice would you offer fellow digital marketers?
Find a balance; whether it’s hiking, music, sports, etc. Digital marketing can seem repetitive sometimes—you can only do so many sumifs and SQRs before you drive yourself crazy! Finding an outlet that allows you to unplug when you can is important.

What’s something on your bucket list?
I want to finish hiking the New England 67 & North East 111, and at some point, the Colorado 14ers.

What did you receive as your favorite food when you joined the Socium team?
Dumplings! When Socium moved to its Broadway & Canal office, I started a dumpling ranking system to find the best dumplings in Manhattan. Unfortunately, we only got through 3 spots before COVID hit. The Google sheet still lives in our shared drive like a little easter egg. I hope one of my co-workers takes over the task of finding the best dumplings in Manhattan one day.

Shout out to Matthew for working with us on this month’s Socium Spotlight!
