For this month’s Socium Spotlight, we’re excited to feature our Director of Data Analytics, Randall Smith!
What made you choose this career path?
I’ve always enjoyed creative problem solving. I also constantly got in trouble as a child for being on the computer too much. Turns out if you combine the two, data and analytics is a surprisingly natural fit.
Finish this sentence: ‘You can learn a lot about Socium by looking at its ____.’
People. Hard stop.
What’s the best lifestyle benefit of working at Socium?
I have a pretty addictive personality. When I get into a project that I’m working on, the rest of the world has a tendency to disappear. On plenty of occasions, I’ll look up at the clock, realize it’s 1:00 PM and that I’ve yet to take a shower. By working from home, I really can have it all; fun projects and personal hygiene!
Have you always wanted to work in the marketing/advertising industry? Why or why not?
Not necessarily. I’m a big believer that data is data is data and as long as you understand the fundamentals and can communicate with a variety of people, then the rest will fall into place. I think I keep bouncing back to the advertising space because it tends to be, from a data standpoint, a bit more bleeding edge than other industries. We also throw the best parties.
What piece of advice would you offer fellow digital marketers?
Please don’t hardcode UTMs or other query-string parameters.
If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go?
The bucket list is quite long, but if I had to book a ticket right now, I’d probably head to Namibia and have some fun in the desert.
Cats or dogs?
Dogs! I have a Great Pyrenees, Sydney, that bosses me around when she’s not napping.
Shout out to Randall for working with us on this month’s Socium Spotlight!
