You’ve probably heard us say that people aren’t Socium’s most important asset; the right people are Socium’s most important asset. That’s why we started our Socium Spotlight series, where we shine a light on the diverse and unique personalities that make up the Socium team.

For this month’s Socium Spotlight, we’re delighted to feature Paid Social’s Division Lead, Kevin Johnson!

Looking back on your first day at Socium, how did your expectations compare to the reality of your role?
I was blown away at how welcoming everyone was and still is. Starting a new job in a pandemic working from home can be scary, but I felt so comforted by the friendliness and passion of my teammates. I also love the new autonomy of this role compared to other companies I have been at. There is a sense of trust and expertise here that is unmatched.

What’s your favorite job perk that Socium offers?
Having a performance-based compensation program is great — it makes me feel like an owner of my work and drives me to do 1% better every day.

What did you do before coming to Socium?
I worked in the theatre industry at a ticketing company’s growth marketing department. I focused primarily on Paid Social, scaling the program to drive new user acquisition. As much as I loved it, the pandemic upheaved the theatre industry and ultimately began my quest for a new position. One LinkedIn message later, and Socium was my first choice.

What did you use to daydream about being when you grew up?
I wanted to be a translator. I loved learning new languages (and still do). I studied Italian for 7 years and wanted to continue that passion, but my love of music, marketing, and business was stronger, and ultimately, my linguistics studies became more of a hobby!

What’s a memorable campaign you’ve worked on with/for a client and why?
Black Friday for Steve Madden! 2020 was an incredible year of growth for them (especially during the holidays). Digital marketing efforts and brand strength played a significant role in this!

What piece of advice would you offer fellow digital marketers?
Stay organized. Keep track of everything. Where there is a problem, there is an opportunity. Remember when things feel stressful to make a list, write it out, and edit edit edit!!!

What do you do outside of work?
I play a LOT of video games and watch a LOT of TV. Currently watching The Gilded Age on HBO and loving the Downton Abbey vibes!

What’s something on your bucket list?
Go to Japan. I need to try Osaka street food.

Cats or dogs (or other!)?
Dogs! I have a Chow Chow mix named Ginny. She’s my absolute pride and joy.

What has been your favorite event/happy hour at Socium?
The New Orleans retreat was incredible. I am so happy I met everyone in person and connected with the team. It really proved that the sense of community I feel over Slack and video calls is also there when we’re physically together, too.
