Socium Spotlight: AAPI Heritage Month Edition

You’ve probably heard us say that people aren’t Socium’s most important asset; the right people are Socium’s most important asset. That’s why we started our Socium Spotlight series, where we shine a light on the diverse and unique personalities that make up the Socium team.

As a people-first company, the celebration of our teammates and their unique experiences is a top priority—which is why we’re so excited to dedicate this month’s Socium Spotlight to Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

So without further ado, please enjoy learning from our team what AAPI means to them, how they celebrate their culture, and so much more.

What is your cultural identity?
Filipino-American.

What does AAPI mean to you?
To me, AAPI represents reflecting on and appreciating all aspects of the blend of my American upbringing and my Filipino cultural heritage. Growing up, I often felt like I was “too Filipino” for my American friends, but “too American” with other Filipinos. Being able to accept that both cultures make up who I am and embracing my own identity helped me recognize how having all these unique types of diverse backgrounds only help enrich our communities.

What is one dish that you think everyone should try?
Any ube-flavored dessert!

How do you celebrate your culture?
By suggesting doing karaoke in any social situation, no matter what.

What is your cultural identity?
Filipino-American.

What does AAPI mean to you?
It’s a celebration of culture and family and a reflection on the journey my family made to build our lives here, and the struggles faced. From their arrival to the US and even to recently, with some of my family facing major prejudices during the start of the pandemic.

What is one dish that you think everyone should try?
Not traditional – but Filipino SPAM fried rice is a FAVE.

What is one piece of advice you would give to young Asian American professionals?
Be proud of your culture and don’t hide who you are. Your identity brings a unique POV to the table. And, while it may feel isolating at times, you can build an AAPI Community/accepting atmosphere in your workplace slowly by inspiring and supporting others to feel comfortable and proud in their own way around you. Support one another and lift each other up, so that other AAPI members feel welcome, and ready to thrive in the environment you create.

What is your cultural identity?
Chinese-American.

What does AAPI mean to you?
To me, AAPI is a time to embrace my culture as well as a reminder of the sacrifices and hardships my parents went through to provide a better life for our family. It’s a reminder that even though my parents my not show their love verbally it’s definitely there and shown through their actions.

How do you celebrate your culture?
My family celebrates traditional Chinese holidays as well as celebrating obscure events that sometimes my parents don’t even fully understand but it was something they learned while growing up so they still do it.

Cheryl Kinoshita • Associate Director, Paid Social

What is your cultural identity?
Japanese – Spanish – American.

What does AAPI mean to you?

AAPI celebrates Asian cultural diversity, representation, and community. Embracing and respecting heritage is essential for an inclusive society. Growing up, I learned to take pride in my culture and value diversity.

What is one dish that you think everyone should try?
There’s so many it’s hard to choose! One foodie activity that everyone should try is going to a shabu-shabu restaurant.

What is one piece of advice you would give to young Asian American professionals?
Embrace your cultural heritage, it’s something that is unique to you that sets you apart and can also bring value to your work. Don’t be afraid to share your knowledge or perspective to provide insights that others may not have.

How do you celebrate your culture?
With food! I love sharing my own culture and others by experiencing cuisine especially by supporting local Asian owned businesses or learning to cook a new dish.

What is one dish that you think everyone should try?
Any Szechuan food that my mother-in-law makes.

How do you celebrate your culture?
By being proud of who I am, what my Chinese heritage represents, and the traditions that come along with it.

I am also so grateful of the arduous journey that my grandparents took to ensure that my family and I are able to live the life we do today. Most importantly, I embrace my cultural identity to ensure that my son embraces his as well.
