Socium Travels to Savannah: 3rd Annual Team Retreat

As a digital marketing agency, Q4 is the busiest time of the year for both our clients and our team, especially from October to December. So, when we held our first team retreat in 2021, we decided September was the perfect time to hold an annual retreat for some much-needed team building (and post-summer celebration) before Q4 was in full swing!

Last year, we took our team to the Windy City. This year, we swapped deep-dish pizza for peach cobbler and fried green tomatoes in one of the most haunted cities in America—Savannah, Georgia. Here’s a little glimpse into what our team retreat looked like.

Day one:

Icebreakers: Diversity Bingo and Trivia
With a remote team scattered all over the US, we kicked off the retreat with some much-needed icebreakers! First up was “Diversity Bingo.” Before the retreat, everyone submitted 3 interesting facts that other teammates might not know about them, and we turned them into bingo cards. By chatting with one another, everybody was tasked with finding out what bingo facts belonged to whom. Next, we divided into equal groups and answered trivia questions about Socium History, Savannah History, and Pop Culture and Entertainment. The winning team and losing team were less than a handful of points away from each other, so the competition was high!

Socium Superlatives
Next, we took our team back in time with our very own superlatives! We focused on unique categories that aligned with our remote-first company culture, with awards like “Most likely to be interrupted by their pet,” “Best GIF response,” and more. Shout out to our winners (pictured below)!

Quarterly Business Review
We then heard from the leaders of each division and our co-founders, Sam and Owen, about Socium’s progress over the last quarter and insights into Q4 projections. We were excited to hear about a few promotions on our team with “Socium Baseball Cards” — congratulations to newly promoted teammates Abby Miller and Karla Ruiz-Cravioto! 🎉

Cocktail Social & Dinner at Vic’s River Grill
The night wrapped up with a cocktail reception and spread of southern cuisine at Vic’s River Grill. We asked everybody to dress in peach tones, and our team did not disappoint.

We were having so much fun that even the birds outside were having FOMO (fear of missing out), so a pigeon decided to fly in & join the fun. Unfortunately, he wasn’t wearing peach, so we kindly escorted him outdoors.

Day two:

Historic Trolley Tour
We learned about Savannah’s history with an iconic trolley tour around the city. The open-air windows allowed us to take in the beautiful sights while the guide briefed us on the history of this old and unique city.

Holiday Readiness Presentation
From client deliverables to planning and activating campaigns, we covered the full gamut to prepare our team for another busy holiday season! With presentations from Paid Search, Paid Social, Shopping and Feeds, and Performance Creative, we touched on tips and best practices for each channel, testing opportunities, tools for success, and much more.

Fireside Chat with Sam and Owen
Socium’s co-founders, Sam and Owen, walked through a moving presentation titled “Where We’ve Been, Where We Are, and Where We’re Going.”  This presentation offered glimpses into Socium’s early days, where things currently stand, and outlined our plans for 2025. It was an inspiring way to connect each team member’s contributions to Socium’s current success and share our “North Star” vision for each division.

Dinner at The Fitzroy
In complete contrast to our peach-toned attire the day prior, we had everybody dress in all black for dinner at The Fitzroy! We feasted on Australian-inspired cuisine and enjoyed homemade peach cobbler gelato for dessert. 

Walking Ghost Tour
Dressed in all black, our team ventured into the darkness of the night with another historical tour—but this time, the focus was on Savannah’s dark history. We stopped by several famously haunted spots and even had a few teammates feel and hear things that defied explanation… 👻

Private Dolphin Tour on Tybee Island
What would a Socium Team Retreat be without a water tour of some sort? This time, instead of alligators or architectural wonders, we opted for a dolphin tour! We were expecting to see a dolphin or two, so you can imagine our excitement when we saw dozens of dolphins jumping out of the Savannah River! It was a beautiful, sunny day, and we were all so happy to enjoy it on the water.

Lunch at The Deck
For our last planned meal, we dined at the only beachfront restaurant on Tybee Island—The Deck. Our private cabana provided the ideal setting for reflecting on the retreat’s festivities and enjoying one another’s company before some of us embarked on our journeys home. We were filled to the brim with delicious food and drinks and even (accidentally) fed some of the island’s local birds:

Our third annual team retreat in Savannah was undeniably one for the books! It blended fun, learning, and bonding in a picturesque and historically rich setting, leaving us with memories to cherish and inspiration for the road ahead.
